My name is Paul McKenzie, but you can call me Macca. I'm a regular Aussie bloke, born and bred in Victoria. I broke my neck in 1996 jumping off a rope swing into the Murray River, becoming a quadriplegic with a C5/6 spinal cord injury. This means that I have no movement or sensation from my chest down, and limited movement in my arms along with all the other fun things like no bladder and bowel control.
I now live in Yeppoon, on the Central Queensland coast. Before that I had a stint in Darwin in the top end where my two young daughters were born (I also have an adult daughter who lives in Melbourne). I made the move to the NT after owning a demolition business in Echuca, Victoria for 25 years. I originally started this site to record my regular travels around Australia, and to advocate for wheelchair access.
I'm big on what the rehabs like to call 'peer support' - I always chat to other people with spinal cord injury whenever I can in the hope that I might be able to encourage them or give them some tips from my own experience.
I'm known to be a straight talking, no bullshit kind of guy, that sometimes can get me in trouble.
The initial Australia road-trip resulted in an epic love story with my now wife Jess - she's a bit of alright, even though she hails from the 9th state, otherwise known as New Zealand. After our travels in 2015/2016 we decided to give IVF a crack and ta-daa we were blessed with our daughter Eleven in 2017. Then a few adventures later and we went again and were blessed with another little girl Billie in 2021. Add in the dog Horsey, and Iām well and truly outnumbered by girls but trust me, I know I'm one lucky bloke to have these girls by my side.
So head over to the blog to read a little about our travels, and flick me an email to say g'day.
