BBQ - calling all Darwin bennys!
Darwin spinal cord injury community BBQ to be held on Thursday February 23rd 12-3pm in the courtyard at Palmerston Community Health Precinct (Super GP clinic).
Yep I've finally got a little something arranged up here in Darwin for the others around with spinal cord injuries (who I call 'benny's), and their family/carers. I've been slowly getting to know a few people around town and getting word out there that there needs to be some events happening to enable all of us bennys to get to know one another.
I'm a big believer in the power of sharing stories with others that have a similar life experience (others call it 'peer support'). So much so I often travel hundreds of kms with the specific intention to meet up with another benny who's in need of a chat.
Often just showing someone my self-drive Chrysler car, or how I transfer independently, can be life changers for them. It can mean a massive gain in independence, the outcome of which can mean an improved mental/emotional state, the ability to resume/start work, easing stress on relationships, reallocation of care hours... the list goes on and on.
So if you're in the Top End and can make it along, please do! Give me a shout so I know you're coming.
Cheers,
